Travel Information
Ouro Preto is a peaceful and medium-size city (~70.000 habitants), located 98 km south, 400km north, and 613km northeast away from Belo Horizonte (the capital of the state of Minas Gerais), Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, respectively.  Ouro Preto was the main focal point of the period known as the Golden Age of Brazil. Considered as one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the world by UNESCO, Ouro Preto is known by its charming Baroque architecture and historical buildings.
Since Ouro Preto is located in a mountainous region, the average temperature for the conference period can vary greatly (6-24°C / 42-75°F), so participants are recommended to bring clothes for warm and cold weather. Ouro Preto is in the same time zone as Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo: 3 hours behind GMT (GMT-3).
To get to Ouro Preto from abroad as well as from other states, you should first take a flight to Belo Horizonte, to the Tancredo Neves Int’l Airport – a.w.a. CONFINS, which is 40km north of Belo Horizonte, and then take a terrestrial transportation. Brazilian participants who are willing to travel by bus are invited to refer to the section “Directly By Bus” or even to contact the Local Chairs by email. We will be pleased to help you.

Tancredo Neves Int’l Airport is the largest, busiest airport located in Belo Horizonte‘s metropolitan area. It is well served by domestic flights, especially from Brazil’s two most important gateway ports: Rio de Janeiro (Antônio Carlos Jobim Int’l Airport - GALEÃO) and São Paulo (Gov. André Franco Montoro Int’l Airport - GUARULHOS). There are international flights directly to Tancredo Neves Airport departing from Miami (USA), Lisbon (POR), and Montevideo (CHI). In this case, the Brazilian Customs procedures are performed only in the final point (Tancredo Neves), while when you take an international flight to São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, they take place at the arrival airport. However, there are also international flights to Belo Horizonte with connections in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, where the Customs procedures are performed only in Tancredo Neves Airport. In order to avoid problems with delayed flights, please consider this issue before buying your flight ticket.

Departing from the Airport the possible transportation means towards Ouro Preto are transfer service, taxi or bus. Additional information on these possibilities is presented below.
